A Poet's Exploration in Watercolor & Ink

A poet for the last 50 years, in 2022, in an effort to broaden my artistic range, I began to explore landscape painting in the dynamic media of watercolors and various inks. These  media can actively participate in the creative process, moving, blooming, and merging with one another in such a way that the painting begins to suggest, even dictate, its final form. As a poet, my usual creative method has been to experiment with putting words and turns of phrase together to see what they might produce on their own, following the poem’s  suggestions as to what it wants to be. I think of watercolor as the poetry of the visual arts, and of my paintings as the same adventure of discovery and associative leaps, revealing landscapes of the mind that call themselves into being.
